Fremantle first in Australia to recieve shipping containers
Did you know the first vessel to arrive loaded with containers was the OCL Encounter Bay? The vessel arrived in Fremantle on the 28th March, 1969. The arrival of the Encounter Bay laiden with containers was the start of global container trading in Australia. The vessels arrival started Australia’s entry into the shipping container revolution. Previously cargo was manhandled, break bulk style, now shipping containers were being used ,saving time and money on labour costs and slow procedures-intensive stevedoring operations, where cargo was largely handled from ship to shore, were giving way to a new capital-intensive model. Shipping container were easier to move around and faster to move from A to B.
The encounter bay has 5 sisyter ships which were all purchased by shipowners in Britian. The owners formed a consortium and thats how shipping containers arrived in Australia!
Before long Australia was trading containers to and from all corners of the world!
Another notable event happened in 1969, the opening of Fremantles port first container terminal . The term inal was modern at the time The twinlift crane at the terminal was reputed to be the largest of its type in the world. Soon after Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane had similiar cranes installed at thier ports
Who at the time would have imagined the growth of container trading as it is today? The Encounter Bay and ships of its day had a nominal capacity of around 1300 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). Todays vessels can carry as many as 9000 TEU.

The move to shipping containers had a big impact upon commercial, industrial, technical and logistics aspects to the shipping industry, transforming the very nature of general cargo ports in the process.
